It’s time to sit down and do some work on a Windows computer. A scary yellow triangle appears above the Internet connection icon, annoying that you cannot access the Internet.

What does this error mean?

Wireless devices, such as laptops, are connected to the router. A router is a device that handles connections between devices at home. A router is connected to a modem, a device that connects your home network to Internet traffic.

If your computer is experiencing an error such as ‘Connected, you cannot access the Internet’ or ‘Connected but not connected to the Internet’, your computer is properly connected to the router but not connected to the Internet. Unable to connect. Conversely, if the message “No connection, no Internet connection” or “No internet connection” appears, it means that your computer is not connected to the router.

This gives some clues to the problem, as shown below.

Confirm Other Devices Can’t Connect

Before troubleshooting, it is important to determine if your computer is the only device that is not connected to the Internet. Grab your smartphone or other computer connected to Wi-Fi to check if it is properly connected to the internet.

On Android, an X icon appears above the Wi-Fi symbol indicating that you are connected to a mobile network and receive data. IPhone and iPad users can go to Settings> Wi-Fi to see a message that there is no Internet connection.

If the computer is the only machine that cannot be connected, it may be due to incorrect adjustment of the settings for that device only. However, if all devices do not have Internet access, the problem is with network equipment and you can skip some of the steps below for PC only.

Before proceeding, if the problem affects all devices, you should perform a simple test. Disconnect the Ethernet cable that connects the modem to the router and use it to connect your computer directly to the modem.

If you go online with this setting, the problem is with your router. If you continue to experience the following problems and the problem persists, the router may be faulty.

Reboot Your Modem and Router

Most network problems concern modems and routers, so restarting them makes sense. However, you do not have to restart through the interface as you would on a computer. Disconnect the power adapter from both devices and leave for 1-2 minutes.

Connect the modem first, start, and then reconnect the router. Wait a few minutes for the backup to start. While doing this, make sure the router and modem are working correctly. If you do not see lights on any device, the material may be bad.

If the computer still displays “No Internet”, continue. The problem is more complicated than a basic reboot.

Note that the device will restart, not reset. Resetting means returning the device to its factory default settings. You don’t have to do this yet!

Reboot Your PC

This step is not required if connectivity issues affect multiple devices.

Restarting your computer, like many problems, is the first troubleshooting step you can try. If you’re lucky, you can restart, fix the temporary error, and get back to work.

Most of these tips assume you are using a wireless connection. However, if you are connecting to the Ethernet cable router, you may need to try another cable at this point to make sure the cable is OK.

Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

This step is not required if connectivity issues affect multiple devices.

If the problem is with the Windows computer only, there is a problem with the computer’s network settings. Usually, a built-in Windows troubleshooter doesn’t solve the problem, but it’s worth trying before you go any further.

To access network troubleshooting, go to Settings> Network and Internet> Status. Choose a network troubleshooter and follow the steps to see if Windows can fix the problem. In Windows 7, the same tool can be found in Start> Control Panel> Troubleshooting> Network and Internet> Network Connections.

Check Your IP Address Settings

This step is not required if connectivity issues affect multiple devices.

Next, you need to perform one of the basic steps to diagnose network problems. Make sure your computer has a valid IP address. In most home networks, normally, the address is transferred to the device when the router is connected to the device. If your computer’s IP settings are incorrect, you may have this issue “no internet access” or you may receive the error “Wi-Fi is not a valid IP configuration”.

In Windows 10, right-click the network icon in the notification bar and select Open Network and Internet Settings. Click the “Change adapter options” entry and double-click your link.

In Windows 7, right-click the network icon and select Open Network Center and Sharing. Click the network name next to Connect.

From here, click the Properties button. Find the Internet Version 4 protocol in the list and double-click it. Here, make sure both the download of an IP address and the acquisition of a DNS server address are selected automatically. Manually setting the IP address is for advanced users. If you enter something here, it may not be true.

Click OK and then try to get online again.

Try These Command Prompt Commands

In Windows, there are many network commands at the command prompt. If you can’t access the Internet in Windows 10, try a few things. Type “cmd” in the start menu, right-click, and select “Run as Administrator” to open a window with elevated command windows.

Use the following two commands to restore some of the Windows-maintained files for Internet access.

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

If this does not work, leave your computer’s IP address and try to get new addresses one by one with the following two commands:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Finally, update your computer’s DNS settings with the following command:

ipconfig /flushdns

There is no problem in restarting the computer at this point. If you still do not have access to the Internet, try a few more steps.

Disable Security Software

This step is not required if connectivity issues affect multiple devices.

Another less common, but reasonable scenario is that your computer has security software that blocks Internet access. As reported in the Registry, in 2017, Avast’s free antivirus software prevented many users from accessing the Internet due to malfunctions. Users who manually installed the latest update found that the problem was resolved.

Disable the third-party antivirus applications you have installed and see if the connection is restored. When it comes to security, it’s worth running a malware scan with an application like Malwarebytes. A malicious program may disrupt your Internet connection.

Update Your Wireless Drivers

This step is not required if connectivity issues affect multiple devices.

Generally, you do not need to update your computer’s drivers. Updates often cause more problems than necessary. However, you are still having problems and need to check for driver updates.

If you have a manufacturer update application installed on your computer (such as HP Support Assistant or Lenovo System Update), open it and check for wireless driver updates. Otherwise, follow the guide to update your Windows driver.

Reset Your Network

At this point, if all these steps don’t solve the “I can’t connect to the Internet but I’m connected” problem, you can do nothing but reset the network settings.

If your Windows 10 computer is the only device you can’t connect to, you can restore your network by going to Settings> Network & Internet> Status. Click “Reset Network” at the bottom of the screen and click “Reset Now”. This will completely remove all network adapters and return all network settings to defaults. Everything needs to be reset, but it may be a necessary solution.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not have an equivalent, but you can simulate some of these resets. Right-click the network icon on the system tray, select [Open Host and Shared Network], and click [Change Adapter Settings]. Then right-click on your adapter and select Disable. Restart and reactivate to see if the problem is resolved.

If neither device can connect to the Internet, it is best to reset the router (and if necessary, the modem). Locate the small hole in the back or bottom of the router, hold it for a few seconds, and reset to factory defaults. If you do not have a reset button, you will need to log on to your router and reset the factory settings from there.

Resetting all allows the default setting to be executed with factory defaults. If this does not work, the device may malfunction.

Don’t Fear “Connected But No Internet” Any Longer

Hopefully you don’t have to go back to factory settings to fix connection problems. This can be addressed in one of the initial steps, but there is no complete solution to the network problem. If you follow all the steps, you have confirmed that your device is set up correctly and that nothing is blocking the connection.
